How does Baccarat work?
Baccarat is one of the classic casino games that seems more complicated at first glance than it actually is. The process is quickly understood, which is precisely why the game is so popular online. Ideal for anyone who loves excitement but doesn’t want complicated rules.
The goal of Baccarat
In baccarat, you bet on the outcome of a round:
- Player wins
- Banker wins
- Or there is a draw
So you are not playing against others yourself, but betting on the outcome. Incidentally, the name “baccarat” comes from the Italian and means “zero” – a reference to the card value of tens and face cards.
The rules at a glance
Each round begins with two cards for the player and two for the bank. The aim is to get as close as possible to nine points.
The cards count as follows:
- Ace = 1 point
- Cards from 2 to 9 = their printed value
- 10, Jack, Queen, King = 0 points
If the total is over 9, only the last digit counts – 14 becomes 4, for example.
A “natural hand” occurs when the first two cards add up to 8 or 9. In this case, the round usually ends immediately. If not, further cards are automatically drawn depending on the score.
Possible bets and payouts
You can bet on the following options:
- Player: Payout 1:1
- Bank: Payout 1:1, minus approx. 5 % commission
- Draw: Payout 8:1 or 9:1
The odds at a glance:
- Bank: house edge approx. 1.06%
- Player: house edge approx. 1.24%
- Draw: high house advantage, therefore riskier
The bank bet is considered to be particularly solid, which is why it is often the first choice among experienced players.
Baccarat variants at the online casino
At online casinos in Switzerland, you will find different types of games that vary slightly in terms of speed, rules, and player participation. The basic idea remains the same, but each variant has its own appeal.
Punto Banco
This is the best-known and most widespread variant – especially in online casinos. Here, the game takes complete control: you only bet on the player (Punto), the bank (Banco) or a draw. The cards are drawn automatically and all decisions follow fixed rules.
- No strategy required – perfect for beginners
- Very fast game rounds
- Ideal for online play with RNG or live dealer
Chemin de Fer
This classic version comes from France and is somewhat more complex. Here, the participants play directly against each other, with one player taking on the role of the bank. The position rotates from round to round.
- More likely to be found in land-based casinos
- Players can make decisions – such as whether to take a third card
- Rarely found in online casinos, but exciting for lovers of a classic casino atmosphere
Baccarat Banque
This variant is also more traditional and similar to the Chemin de Fer. However, the bench position remains with the same player for several rounds, usually the player with the highest stake.
- Complex structure, somewhat less dynamic
- Often played with three decks of cards
- Hardly widespread in online casinos
Mini Baccarat
Mini Baccarat is basically Punto Banco – only in a smaller format and usually with lower stakes. The rules are identical, but the pace is faster.
- Fast rounds, simple operation
- Popular with beginners and casual players
- Often available in online casinos, including live versions
Online Baccarat with live dealers
If you play baccarat online, you have the choice between classic RNG versions and the live casino experience with real dealers. While RNG games are fully automated, the live version brings more atmosphere and closeness to the real casino.
You see real gaming tables via livestream, can chat with the dealer and often even choose between different camera views. The rules remain the same, but the feeling is completely different – more personal, more exciting and often a little more glamorous. Live baccarat is the perfect choice, especially for players who long for a “real” casino flair.
Popular providers and live baccarat games
Live Baccarat brings the casino to your home – with style, excitement and real emotion. And all without ever getting up from the sofa.
Evolution
Evolution is the undisputed market leader in the live casino sector. The live baccarat tables are professionally designed, with experienced dealers and razor-sharp transmission.
Lightning Baccarat
Lightning Baccarat from Evolution is an exciting variant with an electrifying twist: before each round, so-called “Lightning Cards” with multipliers are drawn at random – up to 8 times. If these cards appear in your winning hand, your winnings are multiplied accordingly.
Baccarat Squeeze
Baccarat Squeeze brings the classic casino flair into the living room. The dealer reveals the cards slowly and with excitement, which provides a thrill, especially with high stakes. This variant is ideal for players who appreciate the traditional baccarat experience.
No Commission Baccarat
In this version, the usual 5% commission on banker winnings does not apply. Instead, there are special rules for certain winning combinations. No Commission Baccarat therefore offers an interesting alternative for players looking for different payout structures.
Playtech
Playtech also has a strong live baccarat offering, which is particularly impressive due to its variety. The games come from modern studios with an Asian or European design, depending on your preference.
Prestige Baccarat
This variant offers a luxurious gaming experience with multiple camera angles and slow-motion replays. Prestige Baccarat stands out with its high-quality presentation and the ability to follow the action from different perspectives.
Baccarat Soiree
Baccarat Soirée from Playtech is an exclusive live experience for high rollers. Here you set the pace – the dealer waits until you are ready to draw the cards. The game takes place in an elegantly designed studio and is aimed at players who value style, control and a particularly luxurious ambience.
Dragon Tiger
Dragon Tiger is the quick, simplified alternative to classic baccarat. You bet on whether “Dragon” or “Tiger” draws the higher card – and that’s it. Each round only takes a few seconds, there are no complicated rules or drawing decisions.
Pragmatic Play Live
Pragmatic Play has established itself as a strong provider in the live sector in recent years. The baccarat tables are characterized by a clear design, fast game rounds and a user-friendly interface.
Mega Baccarat
Mega Baccarat is an exciting evolution of the classic game. The special highlight: an additional draw decides whether the round is played in “Mega Mode” – a faster game mode with improved winning opportunities. This creates more dynamism and makes every round feel a little different.
Speed Baccarat
This variant is aimed at players who prefer a fast pace of play. With shorter betting times and rapid card dealing, Speed Baccarat allows more rounds per hour, which increases the excitement.
Super 8 Baccarat
This variant introduces unique side bets that focus on the number 8. Players have the option of betting on certain combinations in which the number 8 takes center stage, which creates additional excitement.
Play baccarat for free or real money?
Before you sit down at the virtual gaming table, there is one crucial question: do you want to practice for free first or get started straight away with real money? Both options have their appeal – and their own peculiarities.
Play for free: Advantages & limits
Playing baccarat for free is the ideal way to get to know the game at your leisure. You can take your time to understand the rules, try out different variants and develop a feel for the game – without any risk.
This is a clear advantage for beginners. You learn when cards are drawn, which bets have what effect and what the course of the game feels like. You can also safely test new strategies.
However, the free game naturally lacks the thrill. Without real money, there is nothing at stake – which can diminish the appeal. What’s more, free spins or demo versions are not available in every online casino, especially not at live tables.
Real money baccarat: What you need to know
If you play with real money, you experience baccarat as it was originally intended – with real stakes, real risk and real winnings. Every decision counts here and the excitement is much more intense. However, you should be aware that the luck factor in baccarat is high. There are strategies, but no guarantee of success.
Whether you start for free or play for real money depends entirely on your playing style. If you’re new to the game, it’s worth trying it out for free. If, on the other hand, you are already familiar with the rules, real money baccarat brings the excitement that many people love so much about the game.
Tips and strategies for online baccarat
Even though baccarat is primarily a game of chance, with the right approach you can improve your chances – or at least avoid losing money unnecessarily. It’s not about “cracking” the game, but playing wisely.
Basic tips for beginners
If you’re new to baccarat, keep it simple. Start with low stakes and take your time to get to know the game. Observe how the rounds develop, which bets win most often and get used to the rhythm. Never play under pressure – patience pays off.
Also, set yourself a clear budget before you start. Sounds simple, but is often overlooked. And: never reinvest winnings immediately. If you make a profit, you should save at least part of it.
Prefer a bank bet?
Yes, indeed. Statistically speaking, the bank bet is the best option in the long term. The house edge is the lowest here – and although you pay a small commission if you win, this decision is usually still worthwhile.
Many experienced players consistently bet on the bank, simply because it pays off the most mathematically. Sure, you won’t win every round, but it is the most stable strategy over many games.
Counting cards at baccarat?
The idea sounds exciting: counting cards to gain an advantage. In blackjack, this works up to a certain point. In baccarat, however, it is of little use.
The reason: you don’t make any game decisions based on your hand – you simply bet on an outcome. Even if you keep a close eye on the card sequence, this does not change the fixed structure of the draw rules. Counting cards is therefore more of a nice gimmick than a real strategy.
Progressive strategies: beware the trap?
Many players are tempted by progressive betting systems such as Martingale – i.e. doubling the stake after every loss to compensate for losses. Sounds logical, but it can be dangerous.
If you’re unlucky and lose several rounds in a row, your stake can quickly become unpleasant. And at some point the limit is reached – be it your own or that of the table. Therefore: stay away from aggressive progressions. They often create more stress than they help.
Instead, focus on discipline, a well thought-out betting strategy and a good sense for the right moment.
Is online baccarat worth it for you?
Whether online baccarat is worthwhile for you depends entirely on what you expect from the game. If you are looking for a casino game that is fast, stylish and easy to understand, then baccarat is definitely worth a try. You don’t need any complicated strategies or experience in card games – just a good feel for the moment and a cool head.
The low house edge, especially with the banker bet, also makes the game attractive from the point of view of the chances of winning. And with variants such as Live Baccarat or Mini Baccarat, you’re sure to find a version that suits your style.
Of course, baccarat remains a game of chance. If you play with the hope of winning, you will be disappointed in the long run. But if you approach it with the right attitude – i.e. as an entertaining game with realistic expectations – you can experience many exciting rounds.
So if you are looking for a mixture of elegance, simplicity and real thrills, then online baccarat could be just the game for you.
